First Implementation of Dolby Digital Plus for HD Terrestrial TV

France's new national high-definition terrestrial broadcasters for the Television Numerique Terrestre HD (TNT HD) platform, which launched in October, are transmitting their programming using Dolby® Digital Plus and Dolby Digital audio streams. This is one of the first major terrestrial high-definition platforms on the air in Europe, and the first major broadcast application to use Dolby Digital Plus.

New Dolby MS10 Multistream Decoder

In 2009, Dolby will release the Dolby® MS10 Multistream Decoder, capable of decoding all premium broadcast audio formats for TVs and set-top boxes, including Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Pulse, Dolby Digital, HE AAC, and all AAC bitstreams. The platform will enable the decoded audio streams to be transcoded into a Dolby Digital audio output bitstream for multichannel, stereo, and mono sound, providing a consistent audio experience with the worldwide base of installed home theater systems.

Televisions and set-top boxes are evolving rapidly to become multipurpose digital media platforms for the home. Viewers will be able to receive content from traditional broadcast and operator sources, as well as other digital content from the Internet and PCs (for example, downloaded movies and programs or content from a USB device or iTunes). The Dolby MS10 Multistream Decoder will offer new value for consumer equipment manufacturers and operators who implement it to decode the variety of audio formats offered by these new usage models.

CBS Brings Surround to 60 Minutes

Last year, the venerable CBS TV news magazine 60 Minutes undertook its biggest procedural overhaul in the program's 40 years of existence. The show went to high-definition broadcasting with accompanying 5.1 audio.

Roy Halee, Jr., Rerecording Mixer for the show, is excited by the surround work he's done so far, as well as by the prospects that await future segments. "It's been very creative; each of the seven shows we've done are audibly rich in natural sounds and it's been fun to play with the soundstage," he says. "I'm having a blast."

Preferred Alignment for Dolby E in HD Systems

System designers and equipment manufacturers may have questions on how to eliminate the ambiguity of Dolby® E alignment measurements with reference to various video formats. To ensure error-free editing and switching of Dolby E signals, we have developed a recommended approach to alignment issues.

DP600 Program Optimizer

DP600 Program Optimizer Contributes to CCTV's HD Program Production

With the successful achievement of broadcasting this past summer’s Olympic Games, China Central Television (CCTV) is working to rebroadcast all of the programming in HD with Dolby® Digital 5.1 audio. To improve the efficiency of this process, CCTV has tested the Dolby DP600 Program Optimizer’s ability to provide an automated work flow for transcoding multichannel audio programming into the Dolby E format.

CCTV will remix all audio programming and format it into multichannel WAV files with Dolby audio metadata. (Neyrinck SoundCode for Broadcast software will be used to create these files.) For its test, CCTV used the DP600 to automatically ingest the files and execute Dolby E transcoding in faster than real time. The completed Dolby E files are then joined with the video files and carried in the MXF format for broadcast.

Metropolitan Opera Enters Third Season of HD Transmission to Theatres

New York's Metropolitan Opera continues into its third season of transmitting live, high-definition performances to movie theatres. This year, in recognition of its technological achievements, the Metropolitan Opera Association has been awarded a Technology and Engineering Emmy® Award for ongoing live global HD cinemacasting.

In addition to providing production support and equipment for these transmissions, Dolby engineers have encoded two Met trailers for digital cinema presentation.

The Met transmissions are increasing in 2009, both in number of presentations and in number and location of theatres. The Met: Live in HD will deliver 11 presentations this year to nearly 800 venues, including new locations in Europe and South America.
