“[We] have confidence that this system will offer exceptional quality and performance to our exhibitor partners.”

Technicolor Digital Cinema ordered 190 Dolby® Digital Cinema JPEG 2000 systems, and will deploy these for its North American digital cinema beta test, as well as its deployment with Belgium-based Kinepolis Group, one of Europe’s largest theatre circuits.
“We are pleased to be working with Dolby as we proceed with our beta test deployment in the US and Europe,” said Curt Behlmer, Senior Vice President, Digital Cinema Operations for Technicolor Digital Cinema. “We have performed our own stringent tests on Dolby’s upgraded JPEG 2000 system and have confidence that this system will offer exceptional quality and performance to our exhibitor partners.”
After months of testing in more than 50 cinemas around the world, Dolby began delivering its Dolby Digital Cinema systems in December. In order to adhere to Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI) standards, Dolby transitioned its video codec playback system from MPEG to JPEG format and incorporated watermarking technology and enhanced link encryption.
National Amusements’ entire circuit is equipped with Dolby sound equipment, says William Towey, Senior Vice President of Operations. “We view the inclusion of Dolby JPEG 2000 digital systems as part of the first phase of our digital cinema beta test program as a natural and positive evolvement in moving from analog to digital presentation.”
As a global leader in digital cinema, Technicolor’s large-scale digital cinema deployment plans will promote equipment reliability and adherence to DCI specifications. Technicolor will start to deploy digital cinema systems using 60 Dolby Digital Cinema systems and will initiate its European rollout by installing Dolby Digital Cinema JPEG 2000 systems on 130 Kinepolis Group screens at ten sites in Belgium, with plans to transition all of Kinepolis’s screens to digital by the end of the year.

Dolby Digital Cinema Exceeds Industry Requirements
Offering superb picture quality, reliability, and user-friendly operation, the Dolby® Digital Cinema system is specifically engineered for real-world cinema installations. Dolby launched the new year with important product upgrades to meet the industry’s Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI) compatibility requirements. So now, with Dolby Digital Cinema, theatre owners everywhere can show more content—regardless of which studio provides it. This is exciting news for the digital cinema industry, which continues to gain momentum.
Dolby has been upgrading all of its currently deployed units worldwide to JPEG 2000 and plans to accomplish worldwide compatibility before the middle of the year. The company has already successfully completed all its Dolby Digital Cinema JPEG 2000 upgrades in the United States. Dolby Digital Cinema supports both JPEG 2000 and MPEG-2 file formats, allowing exhibitors to play back JPEG 2000–encoded content while fulfilling the current need to present movies and alternative content in the MPEG format.
“This is going to be a milestone year for the digital cinema industry, and we want to assure our studio and exhibitor customers that Dolby Digital Cinema will be equipped with the necessary features and functionality specified by the DCI,” said Tim Partridge, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Professional Division, Dolby Laboratories. |

Dolby 3D Digital Cinema—Get into It
What a way to keep audiences running to the theatre—digital 3D cinema. The digital 3D movie experience engages the audience in something much richer and more compelling than what they’re used to seeing in the cinema. And that wonderfully engaging experience keeps them coming back for more.
Dolby unveiled details of its Dolby® 3D Digital Cinema technology at ShoWest in March. Dolby 3D Digital Cinema is an extension of Dolby Digital Cinema, an established, proven technology. The Dolby 3D Digital Cinema playback system supports both 3D and 2D presentations without the need for a dedicated 3D auditorium. Because programming can easily alternate between 3D and 2D presentations, flexibility is increased. Exhibitors can shift a movie to additional auditoriums later in the run.
Exhibitors and filmmakers benefit from the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of Dolby 3D Digital Cinema. No silver screen is required, and it uses a standard digital cinema projector with a simple filter accessory. Unlike other systems, there is no need for extra color correction or other compensation processes in postproduction.
