“We have run over 150 shows in Dolby 3D Digital Cinema with flawless results.” —Michael Thomson, Vice President, Operations and Technical, Malco Theatres

Unveiled at ShoWest in March, Dolby® 3D Digital Cinema technology quickly became the buzz of the conference. The private demonstrations at ShoWest generated an overwhelmingly optimistic response from the 500 industry representatives who attended. With this tremendous level of support from the industry, Dolby 3D Digital Cinema was poised for a successful beta trial.

Dolby held a beta test at the Malco Theatres cinema in Madison, Mississippi, for a 3D feature released in March. Audiences were enthusiastic, and Malco’s theatre staff, even with no previous experience managing the distribution and cleaning of 3D glasses, skillfully implemented Dolby’s reusable-glasses rollout plan.

“We have run over 150 shows in Dolby 3D Digital Cinema with flawless results,” said Michael Thomson, Vice President, Operations and Technical, Malco Theatres. “Our staff was able to pick up the glasses distribution process easily and efficiently, and we are thrilled to be a part of Dolby 3D as Dolby continues to bring the highest level of entertainment to its exhibitors and its patrons.”

Coming off an encouraging beta test at Malco, Dolby 3D Digital Cinema technology progresses toward a commercial launch in time for Paramount’s Beowulf this fall.

Final tests are being conducted on the latest filters and glasses, and Dolby will be accepting orders for Dolby 3D Digital Cinema starting July 1, 2007, for fall delivery. Contact us for more information.

Dolby 3D Digital Cinema Does Not Require Preprocessing

Recently, the movie studios stated their intent that no signal preprocessing unique to any single stereoscopic exhibition technology shall be required of a stereoscopic Digital Cinema Distribution Master (DCDM) or DCP. Users of the Dolby® 3D Digital Cinema system can rest easy knowing that no preprocessing has ever been required from the studios for stereoscopic exhibition with the Dolby system. Any additional processing “boxes” between the server and projector will not be required with the Dolby 3D Digital Cinema system.

Dolby Digital Cinema Recommended for FIPS Level 3 Certification

Dolby Show Player and Show StoreThe Dolby® Digital Cinema server has been recommended for a Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) 140-2 Level 3 validation certificate, the highest level of security certification as outlined by the Digital Cinema Initiative (DCI) specifications. Achieving FIPS Level 3 compliance means that Dolby Digital Cinema offers the highest level of protection from thieves and hackers who want access to the “master-quality” motion picture files used in digital cinema systems. Through this achievement, Dolby Digital Cinema has moved further toward comprehensive DCI compatibility.

InfoGard Laboratories, an accredited Cryptographic Module Testing Laboratory under Lab Code 100432-0 of the National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program, submitted the Dolby Digital Cinema system for FIPS 140-2 Level 3 validation.

“We have worked very hard to achieve this milestone for DCI compatibility,” said Tim Partridge, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Professional Division, Dolby Laboratories. “Dolby Digital Cinema systems are designed to provide the best security currently on the market. We are thrilled to be the first company to announce that our digital cinema server is in line for FIPS Level 3 certification. We know it is important for all vendors to reach this level of content protection to promote the transition to digital cinema worldwide.”

FIPS are security standards developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The standards cover detailed specifications for physical and mechanical design, electronic circuitry, software, interfaces, and algorithms.
