Malco Theatres Chooses Dolby Digital Cinema

Malco Paradiso Cinema

As its first step in a long-term digital cinema rollout, Malco Theatres has successfully installed Dolby® Digital Cinema systems on six screens in two of its leading theatres. Malco, headquartered in Memphis, Tennessee, is one of the leading independent exhibitors in the US.

“We are embracing digital cinema early to be better prepared for the inevitable change in the industry,” said Mike Thomson, Vice President Operations & Technology, Malco Theatres. “As we embark on this major transition, it is critical to work with a vendor that provides technology that can stand the test of time. Due to our long-standing relationship with Dolby, we have built a foundation of trust for their products and services. We know that Dolby will be here to help us today and tomorrow.”

The Dolby Digital Cinema systems are installed on five screens in Malco’s Grandview Cinema in Madison, Mississippi, and one screen in its Paradiso Theatre in Memphis. Since the installation, Malco has presented more than ten movies digitally, including current presentations of The Ant Bully, Monster House, and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.

Thomson added, “Dolby Digital Cinema has been running in our theatres for the past six months, and we have been impressed with the level of reliability and ease of use the system provides our theatres. Dolby Digital Cinema has performed beyond expectations, and we are very pleased to continue working with Dolby to bring digital cinema to more of our screens.”

“We commend Malco Theatres for its commitment to digital cinema,” said Tim Partridge, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Professional Division, Dolby Laboratories. “Malco has already seen immediate benefits from Dolby Digital Cinema, and we are dedicated to providing them with the highest level of service and technology to guide them through their transition to digital.”

The Dolby Digital Cinema system is specifically engineered for real-world cinema installations and offers superb picture quality, reliability, and user-friendly operation.

Dolby Offers Complete JPEG 2000 Digital Mastering and Distribution Services

Person at consoleOur commitment to digital cinema goes far beyond our superb presentation system. Dolby also offers complete digital cinema content preparation at our two mastering facilities, in Los Angeles and the UK. At both locations, we feature state-of-the-art equipment and unparalleled expertise.

Our capabilities include video encoding in both JPEG 2000 and MPEG, audio processing, subtitle packaging, security encryption, and content packaging. We perform thorough quality control at all stages, using 2K DLP® cinema projectors in our 50-seat screening rooms. We also produce copies for distribution, and our equipment array includes 28 terabytes of storage capacity.

At our Los Angeles facility, we have recently encoded 14 feature presentations for five major studios. We provided key management and distribution services for several of those titles, including Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, the summer’s highest-grossing film. We also provided mastering, distribution, and key management for Sony's Monster House 3-D release worldwide. Also, in the feature’s worldwide distribution so far, we have sent drives and keys to Germany.

Additionally, we encoded alternative content for a number of clients for special events, concerts, and independent releases. And for two major releases, we provided a special D-Cinema Hotline Service.

Our UK facility distributed both Cars and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest to digital cinemas throughout Europe over the summer. We are able to distribute feature presentations on the popular hard-drive formats to cinemas that use a variety of servers. And our mastering suite has the world’s fastest JPEG 2000 encoding, faster than real time.

Dolby Further Strengthens Digital Cinema Training and Support

Training

Our digital cinema solutions extend beyond supplying the best equipment. We also offer comprehensive training and support. We’ve recently expanded our support staff to maintain timely response as more and more of our Dolby® Digital Cinema systems are deployed.

We continue to hold training seminars for our authorized dealers and technicians, most recently a four-day session in late July. In addition, we will be giving a “basics” Digital Cinema 101 class for NATO of California/Nevada members. Designed for theatre managers and projectionists, the workshop will be held September 12 at the Dolby San Francisco headquarters and September 14 at our Burbank facility.

Our UK office is also very active in training, recently giving a series of two-day training courses to some of our European distributors, including companies from the UK, Russia, and Spain. The office also provided a week-long on-site training program in Italy this past June.

For information on upcoming training, contact us.
