California Academy of Sciences
On Saturday, September 27, 2008, the new California Academy of Sciences opened its doors to the public.
Located in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, the California Academy of Sciences has been praised for its innovative architecture and ingenious design. The new building, designed by the Pritzker Architecture Prize–winning architect Renzo Piano of Genoa, Italy, features a state-of-the-art planetarium, a four-story indoor rainforest, and a "living roof" equal in size to two football fields and seeded with native plants. The new facility is one of the most environmentally friendly museums on the planet and received a LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Building Rating System™ Platinum rating from the US Green Building Council.
To ensure that its educational movies were as compelling as the rest of its displays, the museum turned to the veteran media and technology consultants at Visual Acuity. For the Hearst Forum's 3D theatre, the museum's 140-seat multimedia venue, Visual Acuity recommended Dolby® 3D for image quality and ease of use, not to mention Dolby's reusable 3D glasses.
Currently playing in the Hearst Forum's 3D theatre is Bugs!, a remarkable foray into the fascinating world of insects. This 25-minute feature was filmed on location in the tropical forests of Borneo. Using immersive 3D technology, the film follows the life cycles of Hierodula, the praying mantis, and Papilio, the butterfly. Slide on your special viewing glasses and see for yourself what all the buzz is about.
Bugs! is playing Monday through Saturday, every hour on the hour, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and on Sunday, every hour on the hour, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the 11 a.m. show exclusively for members.
