Ready to game in surround sound? Follow the step-by-step instructions below and you'll be up and playing in no time.

Dolby® Digital 5.1 technology is built into the Xbox®. To enable it, however, you'll need a digital audio output, an A/V receiver with Dolby Digital, and a few cables, which are specified here. Refer to the diagram to see how to connect your console to your home theater receiver.

Hardware Setup

1. For a digital audio output, you'll need to purchase an Xbox Advanced AV Pack or Xbox High Definition AV Pack.
2. Connect either AV Pack's digital optical output to the receiver's optical digital input with an optical digital audio cable.
3. Connect the AV Pack's video output to the receiver's video input with a composite, S-Video, or component video cable. Note: you don't need to connect the two-channel analog outputs from your Xbox.
4. Make sure the receiver's video monitor output is connected to the TV's video input.

Software Setup

After you connect your Xbox, you'll need to switch to the setting for Dolby Digital.

1. Turn on the Xbox with no disc in the drive.
2. In the Xbox dashboard, select Settings.
3. Select Audio.
4. The Audio mode screen will show Dolby Digital status. Select Dolby Digital.
5. When asked "Does your stereo system support Dolby Digital audio?" select Yes.
6. "Dolby Digital enabled" will appear on the audio screen. Now you're all set!
