Dolby Digital Plus Broadcast Applications
Developed from Dolby® Digital, Dolby Digital Plus delivers the best audio solution for both first- and next-generation TV services. It is the ideal choice for TV and HDTV services offered by cable, satellite, broadcast television, and IPTV. As highly efficient video coding systems like H.264 are adopted, broadcasters can deliver increased capability and capacity through new set-top boxes, televisions, and A/V receivers in the same spectrum they are using today, while retaining playback compatibility with existing Dolby Digital A/V receivers.
The Dolby Digital Plus codec extends the capabilities of Dolby Digital with improved encoding efficiency and flexibility to permit future channel expansion beyond 5.1 channels to 7.1-channel surround sound or more. The advanced compression capabilities of Dolby Digital Plus allows for more innovative features including mixing secondary audio services like director’s commentary and advanced services for the visually impaired. As part of the Dolby broadcast solution from content creation to final delivery, Dolby Digital Plus maintains compatibility with the millions of existing Dolby Digital home theaters worldwide. For stereo and surround sound for any H.264-based broadcast service, Dolby Digital Plus is the ideal choice.
The Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) approved a revision to the A/52A Standard (A/52B) that incorporates Dolby Digital Plus as the high-efficiency audio coding system for robust mode transmission of E-VSB. Dolby Digital Plus is also included in the Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) specifications as an option for HD and other digital TV services. Devices equipped with Dolby Digital Plus are capable of decoding Dolby Digital broadcast bitstreams for compatibility with existing broadcast services.
