How It Works

Dolby’s metadata framework incorporates information about the audio into the bitstream itself.

Each frame of audio carries the required data that enables features such as downmixing, dynamic range control, and—most importantly—dialogue normalization.

The technologies behind Dolby Volume, such as auditory scene analysis and loudness-domain signal processing, are based on advanced models of human hearing and provide the perfect complement to Dolby metadata.

Dolby Volume corrects source and content level differences without the artifacts, such as pumping and breathing, introduced by previous leveling and compression solutions. This is particularly important for content sources that are not enabled by metadata.

Figures 1, 2, and 3 show examples of Dolby® Volume’s operation. The degree of loudness EQ applied is determined by the volume control setting on the TV set or playback system, or—in the case of surround sound systems equipped with automatic speaker balancing—the actual playback sound pressure level.

Dolby Volume supports stereo or multichannel audio at up to 192 kHz/24 bits. It is implemented in processors available to STB, TV, and A/V receiver manufacturers licensed by Dolby from a variety of IC suppliers listed on the password-protected Dolby extranet.
