Dolby Digital 5.1 Creator Header

Dolby® Digital 5.1 Creator is an efficient audio coding technology that lets consumers record high-quality Dolby Digital 5.1-channel audio on camcorders, digital still cameras, optical disc or hard disk recorders, personal video recorders (PVRs), and DVD-Videos and Blu-ray Discs authored on PCs.

Saves substantial space on recording media compared to PCM while maintaining high multichannel audio quality

Creates content that can be played through any home theater or other playback system with Dolby Digital decoding

Is an audio standard for recording video on DVD, Blu-ray Disc™, and AVCHD based camcorders, and digital still cameras

Based on the same proven Dolby Digital technology used for movie soundtracks, DVDs, digital cable, digital TV, and more

Dolby Digital 5.1 Creator is a version of Dolby Digital perceptual audio coding optimized for consumer applications, making it possible to store high-quality digital sound far more efficiently than it is to store conventional PCM recording.

Dolby Digital 5.1 Creator can be built into disc-based camcorders (DVD, AVCHD, Blu-ray Disc, or flash memory), digital still cameras, optical disc recorders, and PVRs. It can also be incorporated into PC software that converts the user’s final audio mix to Dolby Digital for burning onto a recordable DVD-Video or Blu-ray Disc.

Soundtracks with 5.1 channels encoded with Dolby Digital 5.1 Creator can take up less than one-fourth the space on recording media required for stereo PCM audio, while audio quality is what consumers have come to expect from Dolby Digital media such as DVD-Videos and DTV broadcasts. A two-channel version, Dolby Digital Stereo Creator, is also available when only stereo audio is required.

Two-Channel PCM Audio (Red Book CD Standard): 1.4 Mbps
Dolby Digital 5.1 Creator Audio: 384–448 kbps

Why Dolby

As digital video recording media for consumer use such as camcorders, digital still cameras, and PVRs have grown in popularity, so has the need for more efficient ways to record digital audio. That need—to maximize the media space available to record or transmit bit-hungry video—is exactly the same faced by developers of commercial media from DVD-Videos to digital TV broadcasting.

As a result of its high efficiency and high quality, Dolby Digital has become the preferred audio solution for applications that today include DVD-Video and Blu-ray Disc; digital cable, DBS, and terrestrial digital TV transmission; game consoles; personal computers; home theater and automotive entertainment systems; and digital TV sets.

Those same benefits also make Dolby Digital technology an ideal solution for recordable consumer media, particularly since its widespread adoption has led to tens of millions of Dolby Digital compatible playback systems worldwide.

Dolby Digital 5.1 Creator technology creates a bitstream compatible with Dolby Digital decoders from PCM or other source audio.
