An audio encoding technology, Dolby E enables broadcasting and postproduction facilities to carry up to eight channels of sound over their existing stereo (two-channel) infrastructures.
Enables broadcast facilities with a two-channel infrastructure to distribute up to eight channels of audio (a 5.1 surround soundtrack plus two additional tracks)
Enables simple contribution of multichannel audio for live events
Provides frame-accurate audio to ensure effortless switching, editing, encoding, and decoding
Allows audio to be repeatedly encoded and decoded throughout the broadcast chain without any discernible loss in quality
The demand for high-quality multichannel sound to complement the impressive picture of today's HDTV programming presents challenges if you're a broadcaster whose facilities were built for two-channel audio. Dolby® E makes your transition to multichannel sound easier by giving you the ability to distribute up to eight channels of audio, plus metadata and timecode, via the existing stereo channels (AES/EBU) available on conventional digital videotapes, video servers, communication links, switchers, and routers.
Unlike some other Dolby technologies, the Dolby E signal never reaches your home viewer. Rather, it's decoded back to baseband audio just prior to the final transmission and then reencoded into the final audio format—Dolby Digital, for example, or Dolby Digital Plus™.
The Dolby E encoding system is ideal for producing and broadcasting live events because it facilitates the contribution of multichannel audio from the event back to the broadcast center. The system has been used in the broadcasting of professional sports, live music events, and awards shows.
It has also won many awards itself, including a technical Emmy®.
