Dolby ScreenTalk

Cinema Subtitling and Audio Description System

The Dolby® ScreenTalk™ system is a cost-effective way of providing both full-color, original-language captioning for hearing impaired audiences and real-time audio description for the visually impaired. It provides an inexpensive and easily implemented solution for theatre owners working to bring their businesses into compliance with standards set by the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Other applications for Dolby ScreenTalk include foreign-language subtitling and on-screen advertising to cinema audiences. The system can use a video projector or alternative captioning device for on-screen captions. For audio description, it uses a cinema’s wireless headphone system.

Dolby ScreenTalk operates in conjunction with an off-the-shelf PC running Linux-based Dolby software. The system includes the Dolby ST100 controller, all the necessary software, and an electronically controlled douser. It connects directly to an existing Dolby Digital decoder for timing information.

Dolby ScreenTalk will work with any 35 mm Dolby Digital print. No special prints are required.

Dolby ScreenTalk systems have been widely deployed in the UK and are installed in all the main cinemas in Iceland.
