Dolby Technologies for Packaged Media: A Brief Overview

Dolby® Digital, for all formats, offers up to 5.1 channels of audio. Metadata, carried within the Dolby Digital signal, allows content producers to shape the DVD listening experience appropriately for each title. Dolby Digital can support data rates from 56 to 640 kbps and from one to 5.1 discrete channels.

MLP Lossless™ technology for DVD-Audio offers high-resolution PCM audio for the most demanding content producers—and their listeners. It compacts PCM data with bit-for-bit accuracy, effectively doubling disc space without compromising audio quality. MLP Lossless supports data rates up to 9.6 Mbps and from one to six discrete channels.

Dolby Digital Plus, for HD media, extends the capabilities of Dolby Digital, enabling more channels and a wider range of data rates, as well as bitstream mixing capabilities. It provides high-quality audio performance while preserving space and bandwidth for superb video and extra disc features. Dolby Digital Plus includes an extended set of metadata, and the decoders provide a Dolby Digital bitstream fully compatible with existing A/V receivers. Engineered for future expandability, Dolby Digital Plus can support data rates from 48 kbps to 6 Mbps and from one to 13.1 discrete channels.

Dolby TrueHD, for HD media, provides a new level of audio quality, with bit-for-bit accuracy to the studio master. It builds on MLP Lossless by incorporating higher data rates, additional channels, enhanced stereo mix support, and extensive metadata capability. Dolby TrueHD supports data rates up to 18 Mbps and from one to eight discrete channels.
