Broadcast File-Based Solutions
The Challenge for Broadcast Professionals
Advances in broadcast and information technologies have substantially changed the broadcast operations environment. Stand-alone dedicated equipment and manual processes are being replaced with more flexible and sophisticated processes that are managed in automated work flows. At the same time, broadcasters are dealing with unresolved issues that may be even more complex in the all-digital world.
The Solution—The Dolby DP600 Program Optimizer
The Dolby DP600 Program Optimizer is a flexible audio platform designed for professional broadcasting and postproduction that provides a file-based work-flow solution for loudness correction, audio creation, conversion, and upmixing.
The Dolby DP600 is available in two versions: the DP600 base configuration and the DP600-C.
Here's a sample of what both configurations can do:
- Correct audio loudness intelligently and automatically
- Analyze and correct the dialnorm metadata parameter in Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Pulse, and Dolby E bitstreams
- Provide intelligent and automatic speech-based loudness normalization for both PCM and MPEG-1 LII stereo audio files
- Provide file-based program upmixing functionality via an optional software upgrade
Additionally, the DP600-C version of the Program Optimizer can:
- Provide faster-than-real-time file-based encoding, decoding, and conversion between all of Dolby’s audio formats (Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Pulse, and Dolby E) as well as PCM, MPEG-1 LII, AAC, HE AAC, and HE AAC v.2, while preserving the audio metadata
- Provide a quality-preserving single-step multichannel transcoder between Dolby Digital and Dolby Digital Plus
The Dolby DP600 incorporates a unique and nondestructive loudness correction process that will not impact the original program’s dynamic range of coded audio that contains metadata.* This is accomplished by intelligently analyzing the dialogue loudness and metadata carried in the original coded audio bitstream. If any of the loudness and dynamic range metadata is invalid (that is, does not agree with the analyzed audio essence itself), the DP600 process will automatically correct these metadata parameters in every coded audio frame, in faster than real time and without having to decode and reencode.
The Dolby DP600 supports a wide range of applications for cable, satellite, IPTV, terrestrial TV, radio, and postproduction facilities. Its automated, flexible approach to audio processing will save you time and money, and provide a competitive advantage.
* In very rare cases involving extreme loudness corrections that require gain, soft limiting will occur only during program peak levels that would exceed clipping after applying this type of loudness correction.
