Getting Licensed

Thank you for your interest in Dolby Laboratories. To apply for a license to include Dolby® technology in your products, use the following descriptions to determine whether your content is consumer or professional. For permission to use Dolby logos and trademarks on encoded content or in media, you must complete a trademark agreement. The use of Dolby Digital technology in motion pictures requires the completion of a motion picture service agreement.

License for Consumer Products

Companies that manufacture consumer products such as DVD or Blu-ray Disc™ players, A/V receivers, PC hardware or software, digital televisions, set-top boxes, and portable media players should apply for a consumer license.

Also in this category are companies that wish to license Dolby technologies to be included in integrated circuits or software implementations within products designed and built for the consumer market.

Any content intended for public broadcast, wide distribution, and/or retail sale must be encoded using our professional technologies, which requires a professional license.

Agreement for Encoded Content and Media

To use Dolby trademarks to indicate that your recorded audio content has been encoded with Dolby technologies, or if you would like to use Dolby trailers at the beginning of broadcasts, games, or video programs, you must complete a Dolby Logo Use Agreement Application (trademark agreement).

Agreement for Motion Pictures

If you are creating a motion picture and want to release it in Dolby Digital audio, you will need to complete a Motion Picture Service Agreement (MPSA).
