Interview with Sotaro Tojima
Dolby talks to Sotaro Tojima, Sound Director for Metal Gear Solid 4
Under Sotaro Tojima's direction, the entire audio experience of Metal Gear Solid® 4 was designed for Dolby® Digital 5.1-channel surround sound. The advanced technology performance of both the PlayStation® 3 and Dolby Digital 5.1 enables sound creators to deliver an interactive 5.1 surround sound experience with complex layers of sound effects, music, and ambiences.
What kind of new sound expressions are possible with this leading-edge platform?
"We experienced many challenges in creating sound for MGS4.
"These challenges include creation of the "battlefield sound," which used a massive amount of sound data and our unique sound creation technique. It also included the "Mission Briefing," where we tried to create a new sonic expression only possible with a next-generation surround sound game. Of course, we have put many gimmicks into the game, as we did with other Metal Gear series games. In an effort to enhance the expressive surround sound experience, we used Skywalker Sound for the postproduction process. This is part of our effort to create surround sound expressions that are far better than those of the previous game.
"Our goal was to produce an exciting, immersive surround sound experience complete with sonic surprises to draw the player into the character of Old Snake and carry out the suicide mission. Our priority was not simply high-quality sound. What was more important was to make everyone get so engrossed in the world of MGS4 that they did not focus simply on the quality of the sound. Players should get the full immersive experience by playing with a Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound system and dash across the battlefield with the Snake!"
