Connects with One Cable

Dolby Digital Plus is supported by HDMI™ 1.3 and higher, enabling transmission together with high-definition video through a single cable connection.

How Dolby Digital Plus Works

Dolby® Digital Plus employs exclusive compression algorithms to efficiently reduce the file size of digital audio programs. This allows easier transmission and storage. It also brings multichannel capability to bandwidth-constrained applications including mobile networks and Internet-delivered entertainment.

On playback, our decoder applies the inverse of the encoding algorithms. Metadata, added during the encoding, instructs the decoder on such control parameters as channel configuration and loudness consistency. Dolby Digital Plus has a variety of features that add versatility while retaining exceptional clarity and fidelity. See the video for more detail.

Compatibility with Current Equipment

Because Dolby Digital Plus content is easily converted to a traditional Dolby Digital signal, you are assured of the best performance your equipment is capable of, regardless of when you purchased it. If your system includes a Dolby Digital decoder, you'll still get 5.1-channel surround sound, with the highest quality Dolby Digital signal possible.

Equipment with Dolby Digital Plus will unlock its full feature set, including 5.1- and 7.1-channel capability (depending on the program).

Dolby Digital Plus Technical Features

Scalable, allowing efficient surround sound delivery at lower bit rates for broadcast and mobile networks; higher bit rates for high-capacity media

Metadata that describes the content and in effect talks to your playback system

Sophisticated encoding and decoding technology for clear multichannel sound

Automatic stereo downmix for two-channel systems

Capability to support up to 16.1 channels, should future media require that
