Transcendence director Wally Pfister talks cinema sound and explains why Dolby Atmos is his choice for high-quality cinema audio.
The 2014 sci-fi thriller Transcendence, directed by Wally Pfister, explores the "what-ifs" of the future of artificial intelligence. To achieve the level of dialogue, effects, and music needed to put the best sound on screen, Pfister relied on Dolby Atmos® technology.
"I've always insisted on shooting images in the highest quality," Pfister said. "I still shoot film—anamorphic 35—and I've shot in IMAX. To me, mixing in Atmos is the sonic equivalent of that. It's a large-format sound experience."
In the film, the story of Dr. Will Caster (Johnny Depp) is heightened with the use of Dolby Atmos. "When Johnny is in the walls, in the environment he's in, I really wanted him to have this booming, God-like voice," Pfister explained. "Going to Atmos, it allows us to really command the room with that voice. That's been a terrific enhancement."
