Dolby Digital Surround EX increases the realism of movies by introducing an additional rear audio channel to the cinema for 6.1-channel cinema sound.
Dolby® Digital Surround EX™ adds a center rear audio channel to the Dolby Digital 5.1-channel cinema setup, giving filmmakers greater control over the placement of sounds in the theatre.
Rear-wall surround speakers located directly behind the audience reproduce the additional Surround EX channel, while speakers located on the side walls reproduce the Left and Right Surround channels.
For cinemas not equipped with rear-wall surround speakers, the traditional Left and Right Surround channels fill in. This allows content encoded in Surround EX to be played in any cinema equipped with 5.1-channel Dolby Digital decoding.
Surround EX soundtracks on DVD support 6.1-channel audio in the home, provided that the playback system features Dolby Digital EX and the speakers that are required for 6.1 channels of sound.
Sound surrounds you in real life, and Dolby Digital Surround EX ensures that it surrounds you at the movies, too. With the introduction of a rear surround audio channel—and new speakers on the back wall of the theatre—Surround EX takes the Dolby Digital 5.1-channel setup one step further.
The audio experiences we take for granted outside the theatre now sound true to life in the theatre. Imagine a scene in which one character pursues another on foot. In Dolby Digital Surround EX, you'll hear the footsteps of the pursuer approaching from behind, growing louder as the distance between the two characters diminishes. With each footstep, the dramatic tension rises. Moments like these define the cinema experience.
Special effects also benefit from Surround EX. The additional rear surround channel clarifies audio effects that pan from front to back—an asteroid that narrowly misses hitting your spaceship, for example—and gives sound designers more control over the placement of sound in the theatre.
You can enjoy the benefits of Dolby Digital Surround EX at home, too. The cinema versions of films released in Surround EX carry the extra surround audio channel in subsequent DVD releases as well as in 5.1-channel digital satellite and TV broadcasts.
If your home theater system has the speakers to support 6.1-channel playback and your A/V receiver or preamp/processor includes Dolby Digital EX decoding, you're ready to go.
