• Dolby Headphone
    Surround Sound for Headphones

Experience realistic multichannel audio from any pair of headphones with Dolby Headphone. It offers up to 7.1 channels of personal surround sound from A/V receivers, game headsets, and PCs that feature the technology. Dolby Headphone gives you a more spacious and comfortable listening experience.

    • Multiple Speakers in a Room

Dolby® Headphone uses powerful digital signal processing (DSP) technology to create the sensation of multiple loudspeakers in a room. The effect is closer to home theater sound than traditional headphone audio.

    • Listen for Longer

By creating the sensation that you're surrounded by sound, Dolby Volume makes it easier to listen in comfort for extended periods of time. The listener fatigue you often get with headphones disappears.

    • Native 5.1 Compatibility

Dolby Headphone works with the full range of 5.1-channel content, including movies, TV shows, and games. It offers a convenient way to enjoy surround sound even if you don't have a 5.1-channel setup at home.

    • From Stereo into Surround

When combined with Dolby Pro Logic® II, Dolby Headphone can transform content from a two-channel (stereo) source into surround sound for a richer listening experience.

Personal Surround Sound with Dolby Headphone

The beauty of headphones is that they allow you to crank the volume day or night without disturbing others. But when it comes to content designed to be heard in surround sound, like movies and video games, listening with headphones can mean missing out on a big part of the experience.

Dolby Headphone solves this problem by bringing you realistic surround sound through any pair of headphones.

    An Acoustic Landscape

When you listen to entertainment through your stereo or home theater system's speakers, your ears receive sound directly from each speaker and from multiple reflections of the sound on the room's surfaces and furnishings.

Dolby Headphone recreates this audio experience, producing the sonic signature of a speaker system properly placed in a carefully defined acoustic environment. The result is a spacious audio landscape with you at the center.

This natural soundfield eliminates the overloaded sensation that comes from wearing headphones for too long. With Dolby Headphone, you can listen in privacy for hours because the sound no longer seems to be pouring directly into your ears from speakers fixed on opposite sides of your head.

    Up to 7.1-Channel Sound

Built into A/V receivers, PCs, and game headsets, Dolby Headphone works with all types of content. This includes native 5.1-channel content like movies, TV shows, and video games.

Dolby Headphone also expands stereo content into surround sound when combined with Dolby Pro Logic II. Even 7.1-channel surround sound is possible from content preprocessed with Dolby Pro Logic IIz.

Dolby Headphone for Professional Equipment Manufacturers

Dolby Headphone technology provides a real benefit to your customers—the ability to put on any pair of headphones and experience 5.1-channel surround sound. Dolby Headphone also eliminates the listener fatigue common to prolonged headphone use.

    The Technology Behind Natural Sound

    • The Dolby Headphone processor combines the 5.1-channel audio information into two encoded channels that deliver the spatial properties of the original audio. The result is natural sound that seems to extend far beyond the confines of the headphones.
    • For each audio channel (two on stereo programs, and up to five on surround programs), Dolby Headphone electronically imparts the sonic signature of a corresponding speaker placed in a carefully defined acoustic environment.
    • Dolby Headphone mixes the subwoofer, or Low-Frequency Effects (LFE), signal into the Left and Right channels in equal proportion.
    • Dolby Headphone can be included in almost any device that can process stereo or multichannel audio and has a headphone output. It can be embedded into DSP chips or implemented in software for use in A/V receivers and preamp/processors, TVs, and PCs.
    • Dolby Headphone also offers application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) design for higher performance at less cost than a typical DSP solution.
    • The benefits of Dolby Headphone extend to all audio formats, from 5.1-channel DVDs to stereo MP3s. Conventional stereo, Dolby Surround, and 5.1-channel digital content can be enhanced for headphone reproduction by the Dolby Headphone process.
