The first tackles the noise problem from the inside. This approach sets a limit, so the system knows when to stop. The result is a beamformer that stays clean and controlled, even in messy real-world environments.

The second paper leaves the beamformer alone entirely. Instead, it adds a clean-up step at the end — a deep learning model that looks at the output, spots the directional errors that spatial aliasing has introduced, and corrects them. It fixes mistakes before they reach your ears without rebuilding the entire system.

These techniques make spatial audio more reliable — cleaner for voice capture, more accurate for immersive formats like Dolby Atmos®, and better suited to the compact microphone arrays found in everyday devices. While one stabilizes the system, the other restores spatial truth. Together, they reflect the direction Dolby sees audio research heading: hybrid systems that combine physics-based rigor with data-driven adaptability.

The implications are immediate and far-reaching: cleaner voice capture for communication platforms and more accurate Ambisonics and stereo rendering for spatial audio production. This makes Dolby’s research more reliable to improve holistic performance, starting from the compact microphone arrays inside smart speakers to headphones and other hearing devices.
