Since its release 35 years ago, Blade Runner has become one of the most influential sci-fi films of all time.

Blade Runner 2049 carries the original film's bleak but beautiful vision of 2019 Los Angeles 30 years into the future. As dystopic as that vision remains, it couldn't look and sound more arresting than it does in the dramatic imaging of Dolby Vision™ and in the powerful, moving audio of Dolby Atmos®.

The film's director, Denis Villeneuve, says, "Blade Runner is definitely a movie that stayed with me through the years. ... There were some elements that I insisted that would be very familiar with the first one."

Regarding sound design, he says, "I felt that we should be quite close to the spirit of the sound design of the first movie. ... Cinema is about choreography between sound and images."

Hardcore fans of the 1982 Ridley Scott film will hear references to its inimitable Vangelis soundtrack in the new film's score by renowned film composers Hans Zimmer and Benjamin Wallfisch.

In Villeneuve's words, "We inspired ourselves with the soundtrack of the first movie. We used the same instruments, ... a very old synthesizer called CS8 [that] creates those insane, powerful sounds that you can hear in the movie" — signature tones that sound even more massive in Dolby Atmos.

Like its predecessor, Blade Runner 2049 is, in Villeneuve's words, "really a director's movie with a very powerful vision" — and one made even more striking in Dolby Vision.

Like the now-legendary images of the original's hovering spinners and otherworldly Los Angeles cityscapes and electronic billboards, Blade Runner 2049 is a feast for the eyes in Dolby Vision. The brightness, color, and contrast enhance the depth and detail of the film's huge holograms, murky urban landscapes, and other elements of the visually arresting production design.
