Existing defense methods like Vaccine, RepNoise, Lisa, and LDIFS work by modifying the fine-tuning process itself, but in practice, these defenses only hold up under carefully controlled conditions — which isn't how real-world fine-tuning usually works.

Dolby researchers took a different approach: what if you stopped trying to prevent the damage during training, and instead cleaned it up afterward?

That's Antidote. Once fine-tuning is complete, Antidote identifies the specific model weights responsible for harmful outputs using a scoring method called Wanda. It then removes them in a single, targeted pruning pass.

Antidote works because it involves:

No retraining.

No hyper-parameter juggling.

No assumptions about how the model was fine-tuned.

The results improved significantly. Tested on Llama2-7B, Mistral-7B, and Gemma-7B, Antidote reduced harmful output scores by up to 17.8%, with only 1.83% accuracy loss and negligible compute overhead — just 1.02x the baseline clock time, with no additional GPU memory required. Antidote also works alongside existing defenses. Combining it with methods like Vaccine or Lisa can further reduce harmful scores, giving teams flexibility in how they approach safety.

As AI deployment scales and fine-tuning becomes a standard part of the development pipeline, post-training safety tools like Antidote represent a practical path forward — one that doesn't require getting the training conditions exactly right every time. The ability to audit and correct a model without retraining from scratch could become a foundational capability for responsible AI deployment.
