For decades, audio technology had a straightforward mission: capture sound, transmit it efficiently, reproduce it accurately. The pipeline was simple and linear.

Now, the most interesting frontier in audio today is about systems that don't just process sound—they comprehend it. Not just better codecs or higher fidelity, but ystems that can predict whether a listener will perceive a stream as high quality.

Our research at Dolby understood that the is machine listening. And it's quietly reshaping what audio systems can do. Machines that can:

determine the acoustic character of a room from an ordinary recording.

sense when a device has moved, when someone starts speaking, or when the listening environment shifts—and adapt in real time.

Hearing Isn't Understanding

Consider the challenge faced by any streaming service delivering millions of audio sessions every day. Traditionally, assessing quality means comparing a compressed stream against the original master recording.

Dolby's research into RF-GML (Reference-Free Generative Machine Listener) confronts this problem directly. Trained on 67,505 individual listener ratings (collected from controlled listening tests across stereo, binaural, and immersive audio formats), RF-GML predicts a distribution of listener responses, modeling how a real audience is likely to perceive what they're hearing.

The system doesn't analyze audio the way a meter does. It approximates the way a human would judge it. For adaptive streaming, codec optimization, and large-scale quality monitoring, that distinction matters enormously.

Also, sound doesn't exist in isolation. Every space shapes it—through reflections, reverberation, and the subtle spatial cues that tell your brain whether you're in a cathedral or a conference room. For immersive audio, XR, and creator tools, understanding that space is just as important as understanding the signal itself.

Research into Blind Estimation of Sub-band Acoustic Parameters from Ambisonics Recordings explores exactly this: teaching machines to characterize a room from nothing more than an ordinary recording.

Using First-Order Ambisonics captures, the researchers developed a feature representation—the Spectro-Spatial Covariance Vector (SSCV)—that simultaneously captures temporal, spectral, and spatial information. Trained across nearly 9,000 simulated rooms and evaluated against real acoustic measurements, the system reduced estimation errors by more than half for critical room parameters including reverberation time, direct-to-reverberant ratio, and clarity.

The system learns about the space that produced sound in addition to simply listening to it. That capability opens the door to audio experiences that adapt to their environment without requiring specialized measurement equipment or manual calibration.

There's a third dimension to intelligent audio: knowing what's happening right now. A smart speaker, a conferencing platform, or a communication device needs to distinguish between steady-state operation, someone speaking, a device being repositioned, and a changing acoustic environment—ideally without dedicating significant compute resources to the task.

Research into Sub-band Domain Multi-Hypothesis Acoustic Scene Analysis found an elegant solution: the information needed to make those distinctions was already there.

By analyzing the behavior of multiple adaptive filters inside an existing echo cancellation pipeline, researchers created a lightweight feature set capable of identifying double-talk events, echo-path changes, device repositioning, and normal operation—validated across 184 real acoustic events, with strong separation between categories.

The audio system becomes environmentally aware by paying closer attention to what it was already doing without needing a new sensing system or causing a process overload.
