Dolby Atmos Powers Perspective 2 at Sundance and Tribeca

  • Go behind the scenes for insight into how Dolby Atmos® transforms Perspective Chapter 2: The Misdemeanor.

    • When two young men are stopped by a police officer, a simple misdemeanor spirals out of control.

In Perspective Chapter 2: The Misdemeanor, writer-director Rose Troche and co-creator Morris May provide an immersive experience that transports viewers to the streets of New York and puts them in the middle of a petty theft that escalates quickly and leads to serious consequences.

Filmed from the first-person point of view, the film offers four different perspectives on the events—of the teens accused of stealing and of the police officers involved in apprehending them.

Virtual reality imaging technology coupled with Dolby Atmos sound puts the viewer in the middle of the situation, experiencing the same event through the eyes and ears of each of the participants. "By creating the [Dolby] Atmos soundfield for each individual character," says Ceri Thomas of Dolby, "we enable the viewer to empathize with those characters, to hear their voice in a unique way."

"That mix, and the way the perspective of sound changes based on where you are, where you turn your head—it's elevating the piece exponentially," explains writer-director Rose Troche.

Perspective Chapter 2, produced by Specular Theory, wowed audiences at the 2016 Sundance and Tribeca film festivals. Wired called it "The kind of thing that can only be done with the immersive and empathy-inducing power of VR."
