      • About Dolby Atmos

Dolby Atmos enables sound designers to specify different qualities of each sound, including location, movement, size, focus, and more. This frees game and movie sounds from individual speaker channels, so they can be precisely placed and moved to flow above and around you in three-dimensional space. Sound effects follow the on-screen action and seem to emanate from a precise location, whether a character or object is static or in motion, for a more immersive experience.

        Dolby Atmos

How can I get Dolby Atmos for my Windows 10 PC or Xbox?

There are two ways to take advantage of this new capability:

Dolby Atmos pre-enabled: Dolby is working with select PC manufacturers to have these features preinstalled. These new Windows 10 PCs ship with full Dolby Atmos enabled connectivity via HDMI to Dolby Atmos enabled home theater systems, sound bars, or TVs. PCs with Dolby Atmos for Headphones preinstalled with the Windows 10 Creators Update will not need any add-ons to enable Dolby Atmos playback.

Dolby Access app for download: If you have the Windows 10 Creators Update installed on your PC or Xbox console, you can download the free Dolby Access app from the Windows Store or Xbox Store. This will enable Dolby Atmos connectivity via HDMI.

Which PC operating system and version do I need?

To take advantage of the Dolby Access app to enable Dolby Atmos, your PC must be running a minimum of Microsoft Windows 10, with the Creators Update installed.

Is Dolby Atmos available on earlier versions of Windows or any other web browser?

No, Dolby Atmos is available only via the Windows 10 OS and Microsoft Edge browser.

Does my PC need any special hardware, such as a sound card, to enable Dolby Atmos?

If your PC is running the latest version of Windows 10 and supports HDMI output, it can support Dolby Atmos for home theater. You will need a Dolby Atmos enabled home theater system, sound bar, or TV to play back Dolby Atmos audio.

How is Dolby Atmos delivered on a Windows 10 PC and Xbox?

PC and Xbox users who have the Dolby Atmos experience enabled can find content curated within the Dolby Access app. In the future, premium content experiences such as games, movies, and TV shows will be streamed in Dolby Atmos.

Does Dolby Atmos work with all headphones?

Dolby Atmos rendering works with all headphones. Any set of stereo headphones, including earbuds, that you connect to your Windows 10 PC or Xbox console will give you the full Dolby Atmos effect. Over-the-ear headphones will provide the best listening experience.

        Which headphones are recommended?

You'll get the advantages of Dolby Atmos with any set of earbuds or stereo over-the-ear headphones.

Will some types of headphones work better than others?

The higher the quality of the headphones, the better your Dolby Atmos experience. First, look for comfortable headphones that you can wear for extended periods. For performance, we recommend headphones with extended frequency range and good bass response.

There are dozens of high-quality headphones of all types: around-the-ear, on-the-ear, and in-ear headphones, as well as earbuds. Full-size, around-the-ear models are likely to have the most bass; inexpensive earbuds the least.

If you already have headphones and like the sound, stick with them. You'll like the Dolby Atmos experience on them as well. If you're looking for alternatives, you can explore offerings from these recommended manufacturers:

      • Note: Be sure to turn off built-in sound virtualization on your headphones or headset for best results.

Why do I need to turn off other virtualization on my headset?

Any virtualization or equalization supplied by the headset would result in the sound being processed twice: once by the content and once by the headphones. The result would be unpredictable and not effective for content such as games and movies.

Should I also turn off any virtualization on my PC?

Yes, you should turn off virtualization to avoid processing your game or movie content twice. If your Windows 10 PC includes Dolby Audio™ or Dolby Atmos, you should turn that off before playing your Dolby Atmos content. You should also turn off any other built-in virtualization (surround sound) or automatic equalization features.

Will Dolby Atmos improve the sound of my existing content?

Yes, Dolby Atmos for Headphones rendering will provide more accurate positional audio to all 5.1 and 7.1 games and movies than did earlier generations of headphones with Dolby technologies.

What should I do if I have a Windows Store problem with Dolby Atmos for Headphones?

Questions about the purchase, download, or refund of Dolby Atmos for Headphones should be directed to the Windows Store team. For inquiries and questions, please refer to the Windows Store support page: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/products/store.

Dolby Access informed me that my PC's headphone endpoint doesn't support spatial audio. What can I do?

As a starting point, we recommend that you download the latest audio drivers from your device or headphone manufacturer, as updated drivers may enable your PC to support the spatial audio platform and Dolby Atmos for Headphones. If this doesn't work, we recommend trying a USB headset, a Bluetooth® headset, or a USB audio adapter. These alternates to the standard 3.5 mm PC headphones input should enable Dolby Atmos for Headphones on your device.

How do I report a problem or provide feedback for either Dolby Access or Dolby Atmos for Headphones?
